Balcony Gardening

Trying to have a bit of outdoor greenery in your life in Tokyo is not easy, the weather is extreme here, we have a winter that’;s windy and cold and a summer that is blisteringly hot, and only a few very comfortable days in the middle. However, it’s possible. Here’s what an amateur garden looks like here. At least this isa the best we’ve managed so far.

There are plants inside, a potentially enormous Banyan tree that used to be just a small desk plant, the Ash tree is the biggest thing there and it has died a couple of times in harsh weather (or neglected while we went on vacation) so he is called Phoenix as he rose from the ashes more than once.

This year again we are trying to grow some fruits and vegetables, tomatoes, pumpkin, peppers, herbs, kiwi fruits, lemons, lime, blackberries olives to name but a few. With varying results!

Tomatoes rarely look attractive, they grow in all directions and are very thirsty.
